Instruments, Attitude Instrument Flying & Aerodynamics Practice Test

The type of altimeter that can be adjusted to set a desired reference pressure level is the sensitive altimeter. This instrument is designed to provide a high level of accuracy and can be finely calibrated to account for changes in atmospheric pressure. Sensitive altimeters are typically used in conjunction with a barometric setting that pilots can adjust based on local atmospheric conditions; this adjustment allows for more precise altitude readings.

Sensitive altimeters operate on the principle of a diaphragm that reacts to changes in air pressure. When a pilot adjusts the altimeter to a specific pressure setting, it helps to ensure that the altitude readings are accurate by compensating for variations in local atmospheric pressure. This is particularly important during flight, as accurate altitude information is critical for safe navigation and adherence to air traffic control instructions.

Other types of altimeters, like standard or digital altimeters, either provide fixed pressure settings or rely on different measurement methods that may not allow for such delicate adjustments. Digital altimeters can display the altitude in real time using barometric pressure data but may not provide the level of manual adjustment for reference pressure that is characteristic of sensitive altimeters.
